U.S. Air Force Chaplain Candidate 2nd Lt. Isaiah Marshall flips a tire while wearing a protective suit during a visit to the 2nd Bomb Wing Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., Aug. 2, 2013. The exercise was designed to help the candidates gain a better understanding of the training EOD members undergo in their job. More importantly, the candidates received insight from the members on the importance of visitation in forward deployed locations. EOD members let the chaplain candidates try on the helmet and 90 pound protective suit that goes with it. Such experiences help the candidates have greater understanding of the stressors and strains faced by EOD members. Beyond the physical hardships, the EOD members also face mental stress in their dangerous occupation. Erik Santos, a 2nd Security Forces Squadron dog handler at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., April 5, 2013. Santos explained how the dog handlers train and work with canines in various situations. After the briefing, members of the 2nd SFS treated the students to a working demonstration in which the canines worked in simulated scenarios and ran through an obstacle course. A chaperone from Trinity Christian School in Texarkana, Ark., taps on the protective suit of U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class, Tim Habedank, a 2nd Civil Engineering Squadron explosive ordinance disposal technician at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., April 5, 2013. Habedank allowed students and chaperones alike to push and tap against a hard plate in the suit to better understand how it protects EOD members when they are working with live explosives. He explained EOD members normally approach explosives with a remote-controlled robot.
