Matt Gerrits, 307th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron armament systems specialist, loads a 500 pound Joint Direct Attack Munitions under the wing of a B-52 Stratofortress at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., Feb. 1, 2017. The JDAM is a guidance tail kit that converts existing unguided free-fall bombs into accurate, adverse weather "smart" munitions. This enables employment of accurate air-to-surface weapons against high priority fixed and relocatable targets from fighter and bomber aircraft. Gerrits was loading the weapons in conjunction other loaded on the Conventional Rotary Launcher, a new weapons system capable of carrying several different types of munitions at one time. Tech. Sgt. Matt Gerrits, 307th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron armament systems specialist, prepares to load a guided bomb unit-12, at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., Feb. 1, 2017. The GBU-12 utilizes a Mk82 500-pound general purpose warhead with a computer control group at the front end and an airfoil group at the back. When a target is illuminated by a laser, either airborne or ground-based, the guidance fins react to signals from the control group and steer the weapon to the target. Wings on the airfoil group add the lift and aerodynamic stability necessary for in-flight maneuvering. It was loaded in conjunction with other kinds of bombs on the Conventional Rotary Launcher. James Morriss, III, 307th Bomb Wing vice-commander, enjoys a light moment with other guests gathered to honor the veterans of Operation Senior Surprise, better known as “Secret Squirrel”, at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., Jan. 17, 2017. Morriss served as an electronic warfare officer on the historic mission, flying more than 35 hours to knock out communication systems of Iraqi forces during the first Gulf War. The historic mission was the opening sortie of the war and paved the way for U.S. air dominance for the rest of the campaign. Members of Operation Senior Surprise, better known as “Secret Squirrel” celebrate a toast to commemorate the twenty-sixth anniversary of the historic mission at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., Jan. 17, 2017. The mission, which lasted more than 35 hours and covered more than 14,000 nautical miles, was the opening salvo of the first Gulf War in 1991. Using GPS-guided Conventional Air Launched Cruise Missiles for the first time, seven B-52 Stratofortress’ were able to eliminate Iraqi forces ability to effectively communicate and fight off ensuing Air Force sorties.
