Raptor rescue at Barksdale
An injured Red-tailed Hawk is given water by local Falconer Kimberly Porras after the bird of prey was found behind the 307th Bomb Wing headquarters building at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., Sept. 9, 2103. Porras, who performs about 4-5 Raptor rescues a year, assessed the birds over all condition, which was "very healthy", other than her wing injury. The Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a bird of prey, one of three species colloquially known in the United States as the "chickenhawk", though it rarely preys on standard-sized chickens. The bird was transported to a veterinarian for treatment, and if the injuries to her wing can heal, plans are to return the bird to the wild. (U.S. Air Force photo by Master Sgt.
