917th MXS Airmen take second at Oktoberfest
Maj. Gen. Floyd L. Carpenter, 8th Air Force, commander, takes first place in the “male” category of the costume contest at the 2nd Annual Oktoberfest celebration at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., October 2, 2009. General Carpenter was outfitted in a lederhosen ensemble, which first appeared in the German state of Bavaria. Lederhosen are particularly associated with Alpine area (especially Austria and Bavaria) but also in other parts of Europe. There is a long tradition of wearing leather pants of varying styles dating back into the early Middle Ages. The only country with a large German population where lederhosen have not commonly been worn is America. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Jeff Walston)
