Transporting the Past: A Reunion Story
Susan d’Olive Mozena, Daughter of 1st Lt. Charles R. D’Olive, a WWI Ace with the 93rd Pursuit Squadron in France in 1918, poses in front of two paintings commissioned to recreated her father’s triumphs in WWI and a photograph of the man himself. Master Sgt. Greg Steele, 47th Fighter Squadron, visual information specialist, traveled to Detroit, Mich., to gather photos and documents from Mrs. d’Olive Mozena concerning her father’s role in the history of the 93rd BS, which is part of the 917th Wing at Barksdale Air Force Base, La. The items will be used in historic displays at the 917th Wing headquarters building in the future. The most famous painting (on the right) was of Lieutenant D’Olive’s 5th kill (Oct 18, 1918). The artwork is a 24x36 water color painting by Douglas Carrick from Prestwyck, Scottland in 1960. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Jeff Walston)
