Czech Republic welcomes a Cold Warrior

While deployed to Ostrava, Czech Republic in support of the NATO Days in Ostrava air show, several members of the 917th Wing took the opportunity to tour Auschwitz, which was a network of concentration and extermination camps built and operated in Polish areas by Nazi Germany during the Second World War. The sign over the entrance to the first Auschwitz camp reads “Arbeit macht frei” (“work makes you free”). The 917th Wing deployed personnel and a B-52H Stratofortress to Ostrava, on Sept. 15, 2010, in support of the 10th Annual NATO Days in Ostrava air show which is the largest air, army and security show in Central Europe. This marked the first-time a B-52 bomber has ever visited the Czech Republic. The 917th Wing is located at Barksdale Air Force Base, La. (U.S. Air Force photo/Master Sgt. Greg Steele)
