The 98th BG/WG Veterans Assn. announces 2011 reunion

A B-24 Liberator bomber seems to be headed home after a mission to destroy the massive Ploesti oil refinery in Romania during World War II. A lifelike display depicting the historic raids amazes visitors to the Mighty Eight Air Force Museum in Pooler, Ga., just west of Savannah. On Aug. 1, 1943, a large armada of American B-24s roared at nearly treetop level across the peaceful farms and villages of Romania. The mission was Operation Tidal Wave. Its target – Hitler’s giant oil refineries at Ploesti. In thirty minutes, more firepower was exchanged than in two Gettysburgs, and five men earned the Medal of Honor. The Ploesti raiders earned the most decorations in any single wartime assault. The 98th Bomb Group/Wing Veterans Association Annual Reunion will host the famed "Ploesti Raiders” during their 2011 reunion in Shreveport, La, Oct. 17-21. (Courtesy photo/Jeff Walston)
