Developing into FUTURE LEADERS: One NCO's thoughts on leadership development Published Aug. 16, 2006 By Tech. Sgt. Sherri Savant 917th Wing Public Affairs BARKSDALE AFB, LA -- As a recent graduate of the NCO Leadership Development Course, I cannot stress its importance enough to my fellow Wing NCOs. I expected very little going in. In fact, I had put the class off several times over the last three years. Why? I assumed it would be one of those "death by Powerpoint" classes we've all attended at one time or another, and to be frank, I really wasn't interested. But I was wrong. The class is composed of six days of management/leadership/communication training taught by one of the most impressive instructors I have ever sat under, Mr. Diego Bernal. The weekends are spent building teams through various exercises, and recognizing strengths and weaknesses of those within one's group with the help of military facilitators. The question I always pondered in my mind--what will this class do for me? Will I get a stripe because I go? Although those are legitimate questions, they shouldn't be showstoppers. Consider self-improvement, development both personally and professionally--all inevitable outcomes of two short weeks of instruction. Let me know how it goes. -Sherri
