Women's Equality Day calls attention to women's continuing efforts toward full equality in the United States. The observance commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Nineteenth Amendment was passed by Congress June 14, 1919 and ratified by the states August 19, 1920, thus giving women the right to vote in the United States. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the amendment. At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as "Women's Equality Day."
