The sun begins to shine on the Cadet Chapel at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., Nov. 19, 2010. Located just north of Colorado Springs, the USAFA is a major tourist attraction in Colorado with more than a million visitors annually. General Harmon, who had a distinguished career in World War II, was instrumental in developing the plans for the establishment of the US Air Force Academy. He was one of the persons most influential in establishing it as a successful education institution, and its first superintendent. On April 1, 2004, in celebration of the U.S. Air Force Academy's 50th Anniversary, General Harmon was named "The Father of the U.S. Air Force Academy." Much of the Academy is set up like most other bases, but the superintendent, commandant, dean of faculty and cadet wing are set up to resemble civilian universities. Brig. Gen. Richard M. Clark, commandant of cadets, was the Vice Commander of the 8th Air Force (Air Forces Strategic) , Barksdale Air Force Base, La., from May 2009 - July 2010. A view of Falcon Stadium at the U.S. Air Force Academy, from Interstate 25 , just north of Colorado Springs, Colo., Nov. 19, 2010. Falcon Stadium opened in 1962, at a cost of $3.5 million, and has a current seating capacity of 52, 480. The stadium was built into a natural bowl southeast of the center of the academic campus. Like the rest of the campus, Falcon Stadium lies at the base of the Rampart Range of the Rocky Mountains. The design of the stadium is unbalanced, with the western side having two large grandstand tiers above the main bowl and the eastern having a single tier bordered by seven separate sections of grandstands.
