The 98th BG/WG Veterans Assn. announces 2011 reunion
A display model depicting B-24 Liberator bombers crippling the massive Ploesti oil refinery during World War II amazes visitors to the Mighty Eight Air Force Museum in Pooler, Ga., just west of Savannah, April 4, 2009. An armada of American B-24s roared at nearly treetop level across the peaceful farms and villages of Romania Aug. 1, 1943. The mission was Operation Tidal Wave. Its target – Hitler’s giant oil refineries at Ploesti. In thirty minutes, more firepower was exchanged than in two Gettysburgs, and five men earned the Medal of Honor. The Ploesti raiders earned the most decorations in any single wartime assault.
