Walking the line

Senior Master Sgt. Thomas Hoffman, a 917th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron superintendent on Barksdale Air Force Base, La., prepares to give the order to begin a foreign object damage (FOD) walk on Barksdale Jan. 22, 2010. The 917th AMXS, made up of both 917th personnel and Regular Air Force members attached to the unit, conduct a FOD walk every Friday in order to minimize the chances of damage to aircraft on Barksdale. Rocks, broken pavement or garbage are all considered to be FOD and have to be removed from the flight line. These objects could cut into aircraft tires, become ingested into the engine of the aircraft or could possibly be thrown by jet blast, damaging planes or injuring personnel.
