Lt. Col. Millard Matthews III is the commander of the 93rd Bomb Squadron, 307th Operations Group, 307th Bomb Wing, Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. He is responsible for the development and execution of the B-52 Formal Training Unit, a Total Force Enterprise partnership with the 11th Bomb Squadron that trains all B-52 Stratofortress aircrew in the Air Force through initial qualification training, requalification training, instructor upgrade training, and senior officer training. As the commander, he leads the largest Formal Training Unit in the Combat Air Forces, supervising 48 reserve personnel and over 250 active duty students and instructors, while directing an annual operational schedule of over 640 sorties and 4,100 flying hours.
Lt. Col. Matthews graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2003 with a degree in Political Science and was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps, Det 115. After completing Joint Undergraduate Navigator Training and B-52H Initial Qualification Training, he was assigned to the 20th Bomb Squadron, Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, where he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Continuous Bomber Presence, amassing 285 combat hours and 17 combat missions. He is a Master Navigator with over 2,500 hours in the T-43A, B-52H, and T-1A.
